Gozzo, Fanny and twins
From the pedestrian zone up to the Hoher Markt with the dominant Hercules Fountain: The bustling charm of Krems' old town accompanies you. There has always been a lot going on here around the Wachtberg and the Galgenberg. At 36,000 years old, "Fanny" is even older than the Venus of Willendorf: the statuette (7.2 centimetres) was named after a famous Austrian dancer because of her graceful pirouette pose. Or the 32,000-year-old "Twins of the Wachtberg": also remarkably well preserved in the loess soil, this site of a Palaeolithic double burial has caused international amazement.
The Gozzo Castle, which borders the Hoher Markt towards the old town, is comparatively young. Its eventful history began in the 13th century and continues to occupy building researchers and historians to this day. It is one of the most important medieval buildings in Austrian city centers - and its fresco cycles are among the most remarkable north of the Alps.
Would you have thought it?
Despite its sometimes massive appearance, the Gozzoburg is not a classic fortified castle. Rather, it served as a residential and working palace for a wealthy citizen of Krems. His name was - guess what! - Gozzo.
