Built in 1380 as the wine-harvesting courtyard of the Aggsbach Charterhouse, the estate provides a nostalgic setting for the Stierschneider family’s high-quality winery. Since 1862, the Kartäuserhof has been producing wines full of character. The winery processes grapes from south-facing terraced vineyards, including the renowned Achleiten, Klaus, and Hinterkirchen vineyards. The lineup focuses on Grüne Veltliner and Riesling, as well as Gelber Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc, and a red wine called “Decimo,” which is unusual for the Wachau region.
In the restored and well-equipped winery, the highest level of quality is achieved through a combination of traditional expertise and state-of-the-art technology. Thanks to consistent success at tastings both at home and abroad, the winery has risen to the ranks of Austria’s top wineries. The Stierschneiders’ philosophy: “Making wine is the highest form of magic; with the help of the human spirit, it wrests a wonderful drop of liquid bliss from the forces of nature—earth, water, and sun.”
