We Live for NUTS

For about 25 years, two enthusiastic residents of Krummnußbaum—Roland Paireder, chairman of the village renewal committee, and Johann Peham, chairman of the Nusswerkstatt—have been collecting nutcrackers from all over the world. To date, the collection comprises approximately 3,800 pieces from around the globe. And the number keeps growing. About half of these are on display at the nusseum Krummnußbaum for visitors to admire.

In addition to local pieces, the collection features old and new items from Germany, France, England, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the Scandinavian countries, Israel, and Russia—and even from China, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States of America.

The first exhibitions featuring the collection took place as early as 2010 as part of the annual Nussfest and on special occasions. For example, in 2014 as part of the ORF Summer Tour, or in 2019 for “Erlebnis Österreich – Nibelungengau.” In 2021, we were “tracked down” by Rudy Rubinek. Most recently, the nusseum also hosted the ORF program “Land und Leute” in December 2025.

The Krummnussbaum Nusseum opened on October 3, 2020, and is privately owned. The Nusseum offers guided tours of the collection’s exhibition spaces—which were expanded again in 2026—as well as tastings of Krummnussbaum nut products. Visitors are guided by members of the Nusswerkstatt association, who volunteer their time.

In addition to producing the “Original Krummnussbaum Nut Liqueur” and other refined varieties, the Nusswerkstatt also specializes in delicacies such as black walnuts, spicy nut spreads, and fruit-and-nut ketchup. Of course, there are also classic products made from or with nuts, such as fruit spreads and chutneys, roasted nuts, walnut pesto, and honey-coated nuts, all of which can be purchased in the shop.

Krummnußbaum’s nut products are made according to the principles of regionality and sustainability. Only fruits from the Krummnußbaum region are processed and sold locally. The process uses green electricity and avoids long-distance transport.

The “nusseum” is one of the treasures of the Nibelungengau region. Discover all the other treasures—full of delight, variety, and breathtaking views—at www.nibelungengau.at!
