Wine in Klosterneuburg? It has a tradition – and a very long one at that. Excavations around St Martin’s Church revealed that vines were already being cultivated here back in the 8th century.
Today, Klosterneuburg combines the best of nature and the city. Between Leopoldsberg and Bisamberg, at the transition point from the Vienna Woods to the Danube floodplains, lies the wine town just outside Vienna. A stroll through the alleyways is a must, as is a visit to Klosterneuburg Abbey. Wine has been made here for over 900 years. Today, Klosterneuburg Abbey – a renowned wine and fruit estate – offers a broad selection of wines, sparkling wines and juices. You can buy these at farm-gate prices in the wine shop.
It is only twelve kilometres from here to Vienna’s city centre. Weidling, Kierling, Kritzendorf, Höflein, Maria Gugging and Weidlingbach: anyone walking through the various and at times quaint neighbourhoods would hardly believe it.
Klosterneuburg not only grows wine, but also the knowledge surrounding it. The HBLA – The Higher Federal College and Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing – is located here. Not only are the winegrowers of the future being trained here, but new grape varieties are also being researched.
