Between Vienna and Bratislava, you will find one of the shooting stars of Lower Austria’s wine-producing regions: Carnuntum, meaning a lot of history and many hours of sunshine. This is precisely why red wine varieties such as Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch feel right at home here. White wine fans will also be sure to get their money’s worth with Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. Here, they are a touch rounder and more full-bodied than in the cooler wine-producing regions of the country.
The name says it all – Carnuntum has a history that goes back to Roman times. However, winegrowers are clearly focussed on the future: many have already switched to organic farming. And what is more: there are many female winegrowers who run top businesses here, and who are rethinking traditional winemaking.
Where to go in Carnuntum? For example, in small wine villages such as Göttlesbrunn, Arbesbach or Höflein. Many family businesses also include a wine tavern. Wine recommendation for a cold platter: a glass of Rubin Carnuntum. The name stands for fresh and fruity Zweigelt. A wine that is simply fun to drink. The same goes for the selection on offer: more than 40 wineries have a Rubin Carnuntum in their portfolio.
Continuing eastwards to Hainburg an der Donau. A small, pleasant town that can also be reached via the Danube bridge from the north. It is just a few kilometres from here to the national border. Shortly before this is the “Spitzerberg” in Prellenkirchen, the easternmost vineyard in Austria. The wind blows constantly here. The limestone soil is barren. Perfect for the elegant, delicate Blaufränkisch.
