The Wachau is a cultural landscape that has been strongly influenced by Christianity since Roman times. While St. Severin lived in Mautern at the beginning, many monasteries - especially from the Bavarian region - subsequently built vineyards in the Wachau to grow wine, leaving a lasting mark on the landscape.
Today, a large number of churches along the Danube bear witness to a long Christian tradition. You can get an overview of the history of the churches in the exhibition at the Teisenhoferhof in Weißenkirchen. You can find more information at www.kirchen-am-fluss.at, where you can also gain an insight into churches that are not accessible or only accessible with difficulty.
