Kremstal. One wine-producing region, three different parts to discover: the north, east and south. At the centre stands the town of Krems an der Donau with over 1,000 years of history. The old town: breathtakingly beautiful. Right in the centre: wineries, wine bars, wine taverns. And wine experiences, like that of the Stadt Krems winery, small and refined. Or perhaps a little bigger: the world of wine experience brought to you by Winzer Krems at Sandgrube 13.
In addition to large wineries, there are numerous small family businesses that characterise the wine-producing region – to be found in every corner. In the north between Senftenberg and Krems, the coolest part of the region, where crystalline soils dominate. Perfect for elegant Rieslings. Tip: the Kremstal long-distance hiking trail also leads through the most prominent vineyards and to the Senftenberg ruins.
To the east of the wine-producing region – around the villages of Rohrendorf and Gedersdorf – it is loess that sets the tone. This is what makes the Grüner Veltliner here so flavourful and creamy. And the paths through the so-called “loess terraces” are ideal for hiking, for example, through the Rohrendorfer Kellergasse. At 1,650 metres, it is the longest cellar alley in Austria. By the way: in summer, there are cellar alley festivals in many villages – something we wholeheartedly recommend!
In the southern part of the Kremstal wine-producing region – on the right bank of the Danube – gravel and loess alternate. The vineyards around Göttweig Abbey are spectacular. Higher-lying wine villages such as Krustetten offer great views of Krems and the Danube. Here, too, it is the winegrowing families who cultivate the vineyards, organise wine taverns and a wide variety of wine and culinary tastings.
