The wine-producing region of Traisental

Small & full of insider tips

Old and young at the same time. Wine has been grown in the Traisental region since the Bronze Age – but it only became an official wine-producing region in 1995, making the Traisental, with its 850 hectares, not only the smallest but also the youngest wine-producing region in Lower Austria.

There is plenty to discover here: rustic wine taverns, small wineries. In the villages, much is original and familiar. With Walpersdorf Castle, Traismauer and St. Pölten, the region also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine and culture.

Wherever wine is being served.

There is no way around Grüner Veltliner. This grape variety grows in all parts of the region: from Wölbing to Würmla, from Atzenbrugg to Traismauer. The southern endpoint is the provincial capital of St. Pölten. It even has its own cellar alley. Speaking of which: cellar alleys nestle in many corners of the area on the edges of the terrain and in hollow paths. One particularly beautiful feature: the “Ahrenberger” and “Ehrenberger” cellar alleys between Sitzenberg-Reidling and Traismauer. Here, they are proud that at least one “Heuriger” or wine tavern is open all year round. Find out more in the dedicated online calendar for the region’s wine taverns.

Tip: Riesling from Traisental

Those who love German Rieslings would also like the style of the Traisental: elegant, straightforward, structured. Only a few per cent of the vineyard area is planted with Riesling, but these are quite something.

Most of the vineyards in Traisental are located along the striking ridge between Wagram ob der Traisen in the north and Inzersdorf in the south. And if you don’t want to explore the area on your own, book one of the Traisental wine guides. Then you will tour the area with a personal guide on various topics – a great recommendation!
