Wachau side views

If you want to get from the Wachau to the "hinterland", it's usually steep and winding. Not so over the Spitzer Graben. The most striking side valley of the Wachau leads almost gently to higher altitudes: via Elsarn on the Jauerling, where the steepest wine terraces in the entire Wachau tower up. On to Mühldorf, which revels in flowering meadows and fruit trees in the warmer months.

The view of the Spitzer Graben from the Zornberghütte, named after the surrounding Ried Zornberg, is magnificent. If you catch a lucky day (some Sundays in fine weather), the winegrowers here will spoil you with local wines, juices and delicacies!

Would you have thought it?

Until well into the 20th century, the Spitzer Graben was a busy place. This was thanks to its location between the timber-rich Waldviertel and the navigable Danube. Recommendation: A visit to the Spitz Maritime Museum in the Erlahof. There you can also admire the traditional Wachau costume with its roots in the Biedermeier period. The Wachau gold hood even became an Austrian icon: as a motif on the ten-coin in the era of the Schilling!
