The Celts on Göttweiger Berg

Here, where the terrain "flattens out", the Göttweiger Berg looks like a proud guardian at the end of the Wachau. With a far-reaching view of the Danube valley around Krems. This is one of the reasons why the mountain range was already a popular settlement site in prehistoric times.

Around 3,000 years ago, in the late Bronze Age, Celtic communities probably lived here. An "oppidum", a fortified hilltop settlement, existed at the latest in the Iron Age - 2,500 years ago. Settlement terraces were artificially created for this purpose and partially dug into the rock. This created space for post structures that served as living quarters and workshops.
