A land of milk and honey for culture
Richly decorated portals, bay windows and architectural treasures such as the Göttweigerhof or the Minorite Church: the historical prosperity of the former port city of Stein is still astonishing today. One of the most important painters of the late Baroque period, "Kremser Schmidt" - born Martin Johann Schmidt - found inspiration here throughout his life.
Inspiration that he would probably seek today on the neighboring "Kunstmeile Krems": A cultural land of milk and honey unfolds here over 1.6 kilometers with museums, galleries, art and music festivals.
With the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, the Kunsthalle Krems and the Caricature Museum Krems, the Museumsplatz offers art for all ages and all tastes. The Landesgalerie Niederösterreich stands out with its extraordinary architecture. It is the stage for the holdings of the Provincial Collections of Lower Austria, curating them along the lines of contemporary issues. Incidentally, the fact that culture literally has a "deep bottom" here was revealed during the construction of the Landesgalerie: it rises above the remains of a medieval bank fortification, the relics of which the archaeologists secured at a depth of six meters.

The "navel" of the Wachau World Heritage Site is located at the Krems landing stage: the "World Heritage Center" forms an entrance to the Wachau with a visitor center and artistically designed "info lanes". A recommendation!
