View diversity

671 meters above sea level. That's quite a lot by Wachau standards - and therefore a great view all round: the view from the Seekopf flies up and down the Danube valley, as far as the Tullnerfeld to the east and as far as the distant Alpine peaks of the Ötscher and Dürrenstein to the south.

The surrounding Dunkelsteinerwald forest can be seen geologically as a part of the Waldviertel that is separated from the Danube. Granite gneiss forms the subsoil. In combination with the Wachau microclimate and the rugged terrain, this is what makes hiking here such a special experience: sunny dry grasslands, natural forests interspersed with rocks, with pines and oaks, and preferably beeches in the shade. In addition, there is a diverse flora and fauna typical of the region: from the rock stonewort to the Carthusian carnation to the steppe timothy. From the common toad to the large oak beetle to the green lizard, an icon of the region.

Would you have thought it?

Just half an hour's walk away, climbers will also find a practice terrain here: the Hirschwand miniature climbing route allows you to scale a 15-metre-high rock face.
