What reminds us of the Swedes in Spitz
Spitz flourished early on as a trading center in the Wachau. One reason for this becomes clear at first glance: The market was well fortified and defended. While the ruins of Hinterhaus stand guard on the rocky slope above, Spitz Castle - the "Niedere Feste" - dominates the town center. The "Red Gate" tells us that even the strongest walls did not always withstand the onslaught of history: It was the last of seven fortified gates to be captured by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. Legend has it that it was red with blood after the fighting.
Spitz has long since regained its (wine) economic status. Not least as the "headquarters" of Vinea Wachau, an association of more than 200 Wachau winegrowers. Committed to a strict quality codex, they produce natural wines of assured origin.

Spitz Castle has been transformed from a stately home into a veritable center for the Wachau. Several organizations fill the old walls with lively activity. The topics range from tourism and regional development to nature conservation and world cultural heritage to - of course - wine.
