On the apricot mile

This round number saves counting: Around 100,000 apricot trees grow and blossom around Arnsdorf. That's right: this is Austria's largest apricot-growing region. The "Apricot Mile" leads along secluded paths to gardens and farms. The EU has given the Wachau apricot a protected designation of origin, simply because this fruit variety reaches its peak quality here. This in turn has a reason in the literal sense: the soil of the Wachau. In combination with the favorable regional climate, this gives the fruit its unique bouquet of flavors, aromas and ingredients.

Anyone wondering what the proud box building behind high walls next to the banks of the Danube represents: This is Hofarnsdorf - or Arnsdorf Castle for short. The building, which can only be viewed from the outside, is 500 years old and is surrounded by a park with magnificent trees.

Would you have guessed it?

It was a Salzburg bishop named Arno who was in charge here 1,300 years ago. The place name "Arnsdorf" goes back to him.
