Waves, lanes
This is also part of the original character of the Wachau: 34 kilometers of river - between Melk and Mautern - no bridge spans the Danube. The only way across is by ferry. The rolling ferry that connects Weißenkirchen with St. Lorenz on the south bank of the Wachau is perhaps the most charming. The view of Weißenkirchen reveals the typical Wachau townscape: richly curved hipped roofs and houses nestled close together, criss-crossed by alleyways whose layout often dates back 1,000 years or more. The streets have remained almost unchanged since the late Middle Ages!
Would you have thought it?
The rolling ferry runs solely on the power of the river and is therefore energy self-sufficient. And this with a considerable capacity: In addition to pedestrians, cyclists and bikers, there's even room for a few cars!
