Starting from Kirchberg am Wagram, you’ll make your way to Engelmannsbrunn, where you’ll reach St. Joseph’s Church; surrounded by fields and vineyards, you’ll then arrive in Fels am Wagram. Across from the church, rest areas offer a place to take a break. Passing by St. Nepomuk—with his famous tin parasol—you’ll walk through the village and continue your pilgrimage to Feuersbrunn in the municipality of Grafenwörth. You’ll then arrive in Etdsdorf, in the municipality of Grafenegg, where you’ll reach the Etsdorf St. James Church—the third St. James Church along the entire route. The route then continues along a Tampel trail into the beautiful floodplain landscape before you reach Brunn im Felde. Here, you’ll pass the fourth and final St. James’ Church on the Weinviertel Way of St. James—the St. James’ Church in Brunn im Felde. The Weinviertel Way of St. James then leads you on to Gedersdorf. From Gedersdorf, the gateway to the Wachau, the final stage of your journey continues along the wine cellar lane up into the vineyards. The panoramic view stretching all the way to Göttweig accompanies you from there on to Krems. You’ll walk past the Lenz Moser Winery and Ried Sandgrube 13 on your way to Krems. In downtown Krems and its bustling pedestrian zone, you’ll reach the destination of the Weinviertel Way of St. James: the Bürgerspitalkirche in Krems.
Editor’s Tip:
The Weinviertel Way of St. James is followed by the Wachau Way of St. James, with the stage from Göttweig Abbey to Melk. The Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig is perched on the south bank of the Danube and is about a 1.5- to 2-hour walk from downtown Krems.
The route leads from the Krems pedestrian zone, through the Steiner Gate, past the city park, and into Schillerstraße. Passing the monastery and the buildings along Krems’s Kunstmeile Krems, you’ll walk to the Kremser Tor gate toward Stein and onto Steiner Landstraße. Following this road, you’ll continue over the Mautern Bridge to Mautern. There, behind City Hall on Frauenhofgasse, you’ll already find the Wachau Way of St. James heading toward Maria Langegg.
We also highly recommend hiking to the official starting point of this stage: Göttweig Abbey, which offers a breathtaking view of the Danube Valley. To get there, follow St. Pöltner Straße and turn left into the vineyards at the Mautern Barracks parking lot. The trail leads you through loess gorges, vineyards, and the Zellergraben to the district of Aigen near Furth-Göttweig. After crossing the railroad tracks, you’ll hike uphill on a forest path through the Göttweig Forest, right up to the gates of the abbey.
