Show Gardens, Pied Pipers, and Recreational Oases Tulln is one of Austria’s oldest cities. From here, the Danube cycle path runs along the north bank through the Gemeindeau Nature Reserve, past Korneuburg with its picturesque old town, all the way to Vienna, the capital of Austria.
Explore the winter wonderland of Tulln—a city of art and gardens—on a historical walking tour: The tour takes you, among other places, to the late-Baroque Minorite Church and through the Tulln of the ancient Romans. A stroll along the Egon Schiele Theme Trail requires a little more time.
You’ll then cycle toward Vienna along the expansive Stockerauer Au. At the Greifenstein power plant, you can take a break from your bike ride to visit nearby Stockerau—perhaps to climb its church tower, the tallest in Lower Austria. The castles of Greifenstein, on the opposite bank of the Danube, and Kreuzenstein, initially visible in the distance, come closer and closer. Soon after passing the Greifenstein power plant, you’ll arrive in Korneuburg, the “Pied Piper’s town.”
Legend has it that a Pied Piper, cheated out of his wages, once carried off the town’s children from here. The Pied Piper Fountain in front of the neo-Gothic town hall commemorates this legend. The main square, lined with patrician houses, is dominated by the massive, medieval town tower. After taking a look inside the Augustinian Church—which, after all, is adorned with a ceiling fresco by Franz Anton Maulbertsch—you’ll leave this town and soon find yourself in the vicinity of the metropolis of Vienna.
When you finally cross over to the Danube Island, you’ll be firmly on Viennese soil. The 21-kilometer-long “island” was developed between 1972 and 1988 as part of the flood protection system for the metropolis and as a recreational area. That’s why, on the final stretch to your stage destination, the Nordbrücke, you’ll pass wintery beaches and playgrounds.
Tulln - Korneuburg - Vienna
Route Description:
In Tulln, you should definitely visit the Egon Schiele Museum on the Donaulände, which features works from the early creative period of this artist of the century; you’ll also find the Egon Schiele Birthplace near the train station. Right at the start of your tour, you’ll cross the Tulln Danube Bridge to reach the other side of the river. From there, follow the bike path toward Vienna through the unspoiled nature of the Gemeindeau until just before the Greifenstein power plant. Turn left onto the road and then immediately right again to return to the banks of the Danube.
Just before Korneuburg, the path branches off to the left. Follow the road “Zum Scheibenstand” and turn right onto Werftstraße. Alternatively, you can continue straight ahead here and explore Korneuburg’s Gothic-style downtown. From here, it’s not far to Vienna, and you can already make out part of the skyline. At the end of Werftstraße, keep left and then immediately right, continuing on Donaustraße until you reach the Langenzersdorf intake structure. Cross the bridge to the Danube Island and follow the path to the Vienna North Bridge, which is your destination for today. After this strenuous leg of the journey, a slice of Sacher Torte in one of Vienna’s cozy cafés will taste twice as good.
