The Wagram is an imposing plateau extending north of the Danube between Feuersbrunn and Stetteldorf.

There are loess deposits here that reach depths of 20 meters, into which natural cellars were dug long ago. The soil is ideal for Grüner Veltliner in particular. The vines can put down deep roots here, ensuring a steady supply of sufficient water and nutrients. These conditions result in subtly spicy, powerful wines that strike the palate with a typical creaminess.

On the Wagram, grapes are cultivated mainly in loess soils. This up-and-coming region has had its own modern gem since 2009. The WERITAS regional center in Kirchberg/Wagram is home to a regional wine bar and shop where wines from 50 top winegrowers can be bought at winery-gate prices.

What is a heuriger?

“Heurig” is an adjective in Austrian dialect that means “this year.” It refers to “this year’s” wine, i.e. the new wine, as well as to the winemakers’ premises where they are allowed to serve their own wine to the public along with simple down-to-earth foods. These heurige are typical of the wine regions in Lower Austria.    A genuine heuriger is open only at certain times of the year. A few fir or conifer twigs hung out (ausgesteckt) at the entrance to the house indicate that the heuriger is open.
