A sea of wine
A veritable "wine universe" stretches out around Weißenkirchen. One of the best-known vineyards in the Wachau, the Achleiten vineyard, has a formative influence here. Its wines are considered to be particularly expressive. This is not only due to the multi-layered soils here, but also to the different altitudes. The difference in altitude between 210 and 350 meters is hardly a challenge for hikers, but makes a world of difference in viticulture. The highest vineyards in the Achleiten vineyard even bear the name "Riede Himmelreich".
Next to the well-tended vineyards are stately winegrowing estates. Some date back to the late Middle Ages. With their oriels on massive arches, statues in niches, sgraffiti and, above all, their steeply pitched hipped roofs, they have the typical "Wachau charm".
Would you have thought it?
The "Hiatahütten" is a classic witness to Wachau history: this is where the vineyard keepers once lived. Their job was to protect the grapes.
