Description
On ancient traces
If you notice one or two landforms along the way, you may well have spotted the route of a Roman road or building. After the Celts, it was the Romans who left lasting traces here in Unterbergern. In particular the dense road network, the most important routes of which were even paved. They formed the "backbone" of the transport infrastructure until the Middle Ages and modern times.
The Romans were also busy building roads in the Dunkelsteinerwald, on the edge of which the village lies. The route through the rugged forest area is even mentioned in the Song of the Nibelungs! The roads were often hollow paths. In some rocky places, e.g. near Mitterarnsdorf-Schenkenbrunn, the grooves of wagon wheels can still be seen today.
