Trenning

At the pinnacle of viticulture

By Wachau standards, the Trenning is a rough fellow. Its 628-metre summit height is just enough to earn it the title of "intermediate summit" on the way to the Jauerling. Nevertheless, the harsher features of the Waldviertel can be felt here.

Why is it unmistakably part of the Wachau? Because even here the vineyards still dominate. They are the highest in Lower Austria - up to 550 meters high! The Trenning is also geologically extravagant: the gneiss typical of the region is joined by graphite and limestone in places. In a word: a striking type!

Would you have guessed it?

It is the south-facing aspect that allows "high-altitude viticulture" on the Trenning. The Trenning vineyard is cultivated in the traditional way: by hand and without a tractor.
