Once you have reached the 960-metre-high Jauerling summit, you can climb even higher: another 38 meters up to the mighty construction of the viewing platform. The effort is worth it. At the top of the platform, it is as if large parts of Lower Austria have been spread out like a map: from the nearby Dunkelsteinerwald forest on the opposite side of the Danube to the central area around St. Pölten and far to the south, where the Ötscher and Hochschwab mountains greet you.
After these views, a visit to the "Jauerling Nature Workshop", just a few steps below the summit, opens up new insights. The Stauferhütte on the Jauerling was reopened in 2021 under this programmatic name: schools and kindergartens are happy to book a "nature experience program", guided tours or workshops in the middle of the Jauerling-Wachau Nature Park.
Would you have thought it?
The viewing platform on the Jauerling looks as impressive as if it had always been here. Yet it was only built in 1991. Nevertheless, the lookout point has a long tradition: its predecessor, which was still made entirely of wood, has been inviting visitors to enjoy the view since 1842!
