The summit of the Danube

Here at the Naturparkgasthaus, the Wachau lies at your feet. And even more: on a fine day, the view stretches from the Carpathian Mountains to the Ötscher. After all, the nearby summit of the Jauerling reaches almost "alpine" dimensions at 960 meters. It forms the link between the UNESCO World Heritage Site region of Wachau and the southern Waldviertel. And the heart of the Jauerling-Wachau Nature Park, which was founded in 1973.

Scenic diversity over an altitude difference of 700 meters makes the nature park something very special: Between Wachau wine culture and the Waldviertel highlands. From the river landscape to dry grasslands and orchards to near-natural forests. 30 different orchids, over 100 butterfly species and rare bird species have found their refuge here. The Jauerling meadows are famous: Orchids, irises, meadow sage and co. unfold their almost beguiling splendor on the poor soil!

Would you have thought it?

At 960 meters above sea level, the Jauerling is the highest elevation along the Danube. And it flows for a whole 2,800 kilometers ...
