A pilgrimage for the eyes, mind and palate
A cozy market town surrounded by flowering meadows, extensive forests and Christmas tree plantations: this is Maria Laach in the middle of the Jauerling-Wachau Nature Park. The town is said to have a pilgrimage tradition dating back almost 1000 years. The medieval furnishings of the church have largely been preserved to this day. A local chapel was first mentioned in 1263 - the same year St. Stephen's Church was solemnly consecrated in faraway Vienna!
It is quite possible that some travelers on foot first head for another "pilgrimage destination": The self-service farm store in the village center is open around the clock and spoils you with regional delicacies & drinks. Withdrawal and payment on a trust basis!
Would you have thought it?
Zeissing, the former castle complex of the Kufstein family and historic manor of Spitz, is located just 700 meters north-east of the village center: the idyllic location and the restored front of the ruins are well worth a visit.
