Wood hotspot
Today, Schloss Luberegg is known as a romantic event location. There was already a lot going on here 250 years ago: At times, almost half of the firewood required by the city of Vienna was handled at Luberegg. The wood was received late into the night by the light of torches. It came from the Weinsberg forest via the Weitenbach and reached the Danube here. The owner of the wood pond and builder of the castle was Joseph Freiherr von Fürnberg. At the time, he was the most influential entrepreneurial personality in the southern Waldviertel.
Incidentally, Luberegg was the summer residence of Emperor Franz II from 1803. In 2003, the buildings were extensively renovated and provided with flood protection.
Would you have thought it?
The impression is not deceptive: the narrow viaduct, under which the Welterbesteig Wachau - Wachau World Heritage Trail passes in Luberegg, crosses a former railroad line. This is the former Danube embankment railroad!
