Dry soils, noble drops

A true spectacle blooms when the magnificent mullein flowers line the one or other path here. This plant, which has become rare everywhere else, feels at home here on the dry rock and meadow sites of the Höhereck nature reserve.

The wine also feels at home here. The Wachau wines owe their unmistakable quality not only to the weathered, sandy primary rock soils. The climate and the different altitudes also contribute. At the higher altitudes - up to 250 meters above the Danube - the fruit set of each vine is very reduced, but the density of the taste and the clear bouquet of the grapes are world-famous!

Would you have thought it?

The "French Monument", visible from afar, commemorates the "Battle of Loiben". At the time, Russian and Austrian troops were able to inflict a defeat on Napoleon's army, which was considered invincible. France refused to accept this: The battle is recorded as "victorious" on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
