The life and work of the Carthusians
Hammering, blowing and grinding: If you come here at the right time for a show forging, you can experience the hammer forge in action. Driven by three overshot water wheels, the historic forge ensemble is once again fully functional following expert restoration.
This is the tool forge of the neighboring Aggsbach Charterhouse. After its abolition in 1782, the Carthusian monastery was converted into a castle with a vicarage and parish church. The meditation garden is a discovery for many visitors: the "green architecture" of the trellises precisely replicates the heart of the former monastery: the large cloister with its seven Carthusian cells. Text panels provide food for thought by contrasting the spirituality of the Carthusians with modern philosophies.
Would you have guessed?
The small village of Aggsbach has an astonishingly high density of museums: Austria's mineralogical diversity can be marveled at in the "Geozentrum Steinstadel". The "Carthusian Museum", on the other hand, brings the history of the Carthusians and their local charterhouse to life.
