The Wachau "framed"

A magnificent view down into the Aggsbach section of the Wachau: Could there be a more fitting frame for this than colossally layered blocks of gneiss and granite? These form the window of the popular "window rock".

As idyllic as it is to wander through the vineyards and forests of the Wachau, geologically it is a drama: a 36-kilometre-long breakthrough valley through which the Danube forces its way through the rock at the southern tip of the Bohemian Massif. To the north is the Waldviertel, to the south the Dunkelsteinerwald.

Would you have thought it?

In some places, the Danube has carved its way more than 700 meters deep into the rump mountain landscape of the Bohemian Massif!
