The tranquil gateway to the Wachau
Directly opposite the imposing Melk Abbey on the other side of the Danube: in contrast, the 1,800-strong community of Emmersdorf looks almost tranquil. You hardly notice it here and "suddenly it's Wachau". The Kolomanistiege, which leads up from the village center to the parish church, offers a beautiful view over the roofs of the village: A remarkable late Gothic pillar basilica, surrounded by massive buttresses. Both the long choir and the west tower were built in the 15th century. At that time, remnants of the adjoining woodland to the north were still primeval forest - the "silva nortica".
Would you have thought it?
The mighty Danube bridge near Emmersdorf was only opened in 1973. Until then, a roller ferry operated here.
