Water and fire

The motor ferry connects Dürnstein with Rossatz in just a few minutes (Easter to the end of October). Crossing the Danube was much more difficult in historical times. The Romans regarded it as a "limes", which they defended by all means against invasions by the "barbarians" from the north. The "Burgus" in Rossatzbach at the exit of the Windstallgraben is a silent witness to this: only noticed by a few and only discovered in 1952, the almost 2,000-year-old remains of the wall mark the site of a Roman watchtower.

Would you have guessed it?

The section around Dürnstein and Rossatz is one of the centers of the annual midsummer celebrations in the Wachau. One of the oldest and perhaps the most spectacular festivals in Lower Austria: thousands of lights float on the Danube, fireplaces light up the villages and torches light up the vineyards, fireworks transform the sky into a sea of lights ... Don't miss it!
