Between forest and water
The special thing about the location of Aggsbach Dorf only becomes clear at second glance: here, the eponymous Aggsbach opens up one of the few entrances to the Dunkelsteinerwald forest from the Danube side. Perhaps the Celts, who settled here around 1,000 BC, already used it. In any case, the Romans did so later: they not only extended the important Limes connection along the Danube to Mautern, but also built a road to the site of the later Maria Langegg.

Here, "at eye level" with the Danube, flood protection is of particular importance. With a length of around 3.5 kilometers and 48 million euros in investments, the flood protection in Schönbühel-Aggsbach is one of the largest in Lower Austria.
