The Kuenringer Fortresses and the present-day ruins of Aggstein, the magnificent Baroque pilgrimage monastery of Maria Langegg, the wintry Dunkelsteinerwald forest with the Buchental valley, and breathtaking panoramic views from the Hoher Stein and the Glauberkreuz overlooking the Arnsdorf vineyards await hikers on the stage from Aggsbach Dorf to Hofarnsdorf.
The stage from Aggsbach Dorf to Hofarnsdorf leads along varied forest and field trails up to the imposing ruins of Aggstein Castle and on into the tranquil winter landscapes of the Dunkelsteinerwald. Passing by the Baroque pilgrimage monastery of Maria Langegg, the route winds through the tranquil Buchental valley. A short, secured path leads to the Hohen Stein, one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Wachau region, offering sweeping views across the Danube Valley.
The trail then leads steadily downhill through the Buchental valley, flanked by majestic beech forests, to the Glauberkreuz rest area in the midst of the Arnsdorf vineyards, and on to the Arnsdorf–Spitz roll-on ferry terminal. From there, the stage’s destination, Hofarnsdorf Castle, is quickly reached, marking the end of this stage, which is particularly rich in both scenic and cultural diversity.
As you hike along the Welterbesteig Wachau - Wachau World Heritage Trail, you’ll discover, step by step, why the Wachau has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage region. Along carefully curated World Heritage sites, the defining highlights of the World Heritage region become apparent—the interplay of the historic cultural landscape, traditional viticulture, extraordinary natural areas, and the Danube as a defining element.
Thanks to good rail connections, a relaxed and sustainable journey to the Wachau is easily possible. Even in winter, a dense network of public transportation in the region ensures that all stages can be comfortably reached by bus. This makes it very easy to combine different stages.
The Welterbesteig Wachau - Wachau World Heritage Trail has also been awarded the Austrian Hiking Seal of Quality. This certification stands for high-quality standards in route guidance, signage, safety, and infrastructure, and confirms the Welterbesteig Wachau - Wachau World Heritage Trail as a reliable and high-quality hiking experience in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The final ascent to the Hoher Stein is a climbing section secured with ladders and ropes.

The stage begins at the information point by the bus stop in Aggsbach Dorf and leads first to the hammer mill. Across from the former inn “Zur Kartause,” the ascent to the Aggstein Castle ruins begins. Passing the Plague Cross, the trail leads to the ruins’ parking lot and then continues through the wintry Herrenwald forest and the Aggsteingraben ravine.
The imposing Aggstein Castle ruins date back to the 12th century and are among Austria’s most significant castles. It was once, among other things, the seat of the Kuenring family and the notorious Georg Scheck vom Wald. The stamp station is located in front of the entrance, and inside the ruins, a tavern invites visitors to stop for a break (admission fee).
The route continues along a beautiful forest path to the Maria Langegg Monastery with its pilgrimage museum. It then heads back into the Dunkelsteinerwald, past the Goldreut wayside shrine to the Friedrichsfelsen. A worthwhile detour takes you over a short climbing section to the Hoher Stein. As one of the most beautiful vantage points on the Welterbesteig Wachau - Wachau World Heritage Trail, it offers impressive panoramic views of the region.
The trail leads downhill through the Buchental valley to the Glauberkreuz rest area, nestled among the Arnsdorf vineyards. This is where the Welterbesteig Wachau - Wachau World Heritage Trail was inaugurated in May 2010. Shortly thereafter, you’ll reach the B33. After a short stretch along the road, the route continues above the Arnsdorf–Spitz roll-on/roll-off ferry and then runs parallel to the Danube to Hofarnsdorf.
There, the trail leads to the castle and the parish church. The Biedermeier-era castle, situated directly on the Danube, is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. At the end of the route, a particularly beautiful view opens up across the Danube toward Spitz, featuring the Tausendeimerberg, Ried Atzberg, and Rotes Tor.
