Hiking tour Starting from
This wonderful hiking circuit offers well-maintained paths through wine terraces, beautiful views of the Danube and vineyards in the Krems and Traisental valleys as well as a detour to the Wetterkreuz church, which is well worth a visit with its unique location high above the landscape.
Starting from Höbenbach, the hiking circuit leads through the wine cellar lane to the Gegenkreuz, with a view of Göttweig Abbey. The route continues between forest and field, past the white cross to the Osterhaus family's Gasthaus zur Schönen Aussicht. From here it is only a short distance to the Maria Elend pilgrimage chapel, where the Way of St. James also runs. At this point, the panoramic view over the Fladnitz Valley to the Ötscher and Göttweig to Maria Dreieichen invites you to linger.
After the chapel, the trail continues along the unpaved path to the Red Cross and between forests, meadows, fertile fields and orchards to the small wine village of Theyern.
The trail then continues towards the forest, past the white cross and through vineyards with wonderful views across the vineyards to the Danube in the Tullnerfeld and the foothills of the Alps. You soon reach Nussdorf ob der Traisen with its highly recommended "Nussdorf-Traisental Prehistoric Museum", where the oldest wine core find, dating back 4000 years, is documented and the strictly protected European primeval vine, also known as European wild wine or Vitis Vinifera subsp. sylvstris, is planted in front of the museum.
The hiking circuit leads through the village center, past the church to the Neusiedlerkreuz cross, then on through the Weiterrassen to the turn-off towards the Wetterkreuz church.
This detour is definitely worth it, if only for the magnificent view of the Danube and the impressive location of the church, whose extraordinary history can be read about at the entrance.
A short way back and the trail continues to the left through the vineyards and loess hollow paths past a lovely church to Hollenburg back to the Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German) long-distance hiking trail.
The Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German) long-distance hiking trail leads past the numerous Hollenburg vineyards and with beautiful views of the wine terraces to Krustetten. With a view of Göttweig Abbey, the trail leads back to the starting point in Höbenbach.
