Description

It is wide, the plain of the Tullnerfeld. And therefore ideal for leisure cyclists who follow in the footsteps of the ancient Romans between Tulln and Traismauer and encounter the legacy of the region's two great sons - the painter Egon Schiele and the musician Franz Schubert.

You can cycle the 72-kilometer Tullnerfeld cycle path as an alternative loop to the Danube cycle path or as a circular route - in both directions. Thanks to the good rail connections, it is also possible to cycle only parts of the route.

Coming from the west, you leave the Danube cycle path at Traismauer and cycle through the pristine floodplain landscape, where the Traisen oxbow lake offers welcome refreshment in hot weather. In the center of Traismauer, stone reminders of the 2000 year old history - those interested can visit the town and local history museum in the horseshoe tower.

The paved cycle path leads you along fertile fields to the longest cultivated wine cellar lane in Austria - the Ahrenberger-Eichberger Kellergasse. Here, winegrowers await your visit with a cool glass of wine and regional delicacies. A "talking wine barrel" tells stories, while the "Korkenzieher" observation tower offers a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. At the foot of Sitzenberg Castle, the castle pond with its sunbathing area, jetty and playground invites you to relax.

The route continues along meadows and fields through the center of Reidling and other typical Tullnerfeld villages. In Atzenbrugg, where Franz Schubert spent his summer months composing and playing music, it is worth visiting the memorial and the Schubert Museum in the castle. The Schubertiades are held here in summer.

On the way to Michelhausen, the route takes you past the Leopold Figl Museum in Rust, where everything revolves around the former Austrian chancellor. Depending on the season, you then cycle through lush green or bright yellow and can buy regional products directly from the farmers.

After the new Tullnerfeld train station, the route takes you to Judenau: from here, the cycle route runs alongside the Große Tulln. You cycle comfortably along the river dam to Langenrohr and have a choice here: exciting contemporary history in the Josef Reiter Museum or culinary delights in one of the many wine taverns. Our tip: try both!

Last but not least - the cultural highlight of the route: the city tour through Tulln, past the Schiele Museum and Schiele's renovated birthplace, the GARTEN TULLN at the water park and the Danube beach, which is worth seeing at any time of year. The cycle route then returns along the Danube via the Roman town of Zwentendorf to Traismauer.
