We hike a good 16 km from Spitz to Aggsbach Markt and discover highlights such as the wine-growing village of Spitz, the ruins of Hinterhaus Castle, the famous Devil's Wall, the Gothic-medieval village of Schwallenbach and meet the Venus of Willendorf. Sweeping views of the Wachau and idyllic forest and vineyard landscapes complete our hiking experience.

Jauerling loop: from Spitz to Aggsbach

From Spitz, our hike leads past Spitz Castle in the direction of Quitten and Radlbach. We come to the ruins of Hinterhaus Castle and hike over the legendary Devil's Wall before reaching the medieval ensemble of Schwallenbach. Our next destination is the site where the most famous woman in the Wachau was found - Venus of Willendorf. We reach the "mountain village" of Köfering via an old mountain path. We continue along idyllic forest paths. After the old Schleinkhof estate, we head downhill to our stage destination of Aggsbach Markt.

Equipment Sturdy hiking shoes, rain protection, sufficient drinks and provisions.
Route description We begin our route at the church square in Spitz and hike up to the castle. To the right through the gate, our path continues to the end of the castle, where we turn left uphill towards Quitten and Radlbach. Straight ahead, after a short time, we reach Ottenschlägerstraße and cross the Spitzer Bach on the bridge. We then keep left and hike up the large fork in the path to the pavilion and further to the Hinterhaus castle ruins, where we can rest comfortably. Behind the picturesque castle ruins, we follow the path into the forest and at three crossings keep left, now walking parallel to the Danube over the famous Devil's Wall to Schwallenbach. In the village, we continue right on the old country road, which leads us through beautiful orchards and apricot gardens. We cross the railway tracks to the right and then immediately turn left into the vineyards up to the site of the Venus of Willendorf. The lovely rest area at the Venus statue offers a magnificent view of the Danube and the surrounding vineyards. After a relaxing break, we reach Willendorf (the stamp station is located at the Venusium Museum – we go left at the creek and under the railway). We go right at the Willendorf creek into the Willendorf gorge with its abandoned stone terraces. After a short time, we take the left fork and follow the high path to the mountain village of Köfering, where we have a magnificent view of the Aggstein castle ruins on the opposite Danube bank. At the end of the village, we go right uphill to the Rosenmühle and then left into the forest. The beautiful forest path leads us to the old farm Schleinkhof, where we cross the Wachau World Heritage Trail. We then follow the so-called Schmuckstraße briefly uphill and through the forest down to Aggsbach Markt. Opposite the train station we reach the village, keep right, and at the parish church turn left and shortly thereafter arrive at the marketplace, where we comfortably end the stage.

Getting there A1 to the Melk exit, then continue on the B3 to Spitz or Aggsbach Markt
Public transport The places are reachable by public transport seven days a week. Returning to the starting point of the hike is possible.Spitz and Aggsbach Markt are connected by bus line 715 Krems-Spitz-Melk or Melk-Spitz-Krems. On the south shore (bus line 720 Krems-Rossatz-Melk or Melk-Rossatz-Krems), buses run every two hours. Editor’s tip The Venusium Museum (stamp station) in Willendorf is worth a visit; there are many other interesting themed and circular hiking trails in the Jauerling Nature Park.
