The pilgrimage trail starts at the pilgrimage church Maria am Birnbaum in Wolfsthal, marked by the scallop shell. From here, the path leads towards Hainburg through the Donau-Auen National Park and along the Danube, past the Röthelstein ruins. In Hainburg an der Donau, you will experience an impressive medieval town with well-preserved fortifications, narrow alleyways and historic buildings, before the trail leads over the Blutstiege to the Danube and on towards Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.
The start of the pilgrimage route is marked by a large scallop shell and the pilgrimage church “Maria am Birnbaum.” The church has been a Marian shrine since 1737 and was dedicated to St. James. From here, the route continues toward Hainburg to the Donau-Auen National Park. Walk along the main street to the edge of town, where there is a small square where you can rest. Turn right onto a side street leading to the Treppelweg path alongside the Danube.
On the way to Hainburg, you’ll pass the Röthelstein ruins. The ruins sit on a 30-meter-high rocky outcrop along the Danube, directly across from the Devín Castle ruins in Slovakia. Continuing along the Danube, Hainburg an der Donau offers a unique medieval experience with one of the oldest and best-preserved city fortifications in Europe. With its narrow alleys and historic buildings, the town presents itself as a picturesque gateway to the past. You can reach the Danube via the Blutstiege and walk directly past the boat landing toward Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.
