For most of the stage, we hike along secluded paths and through fields, as well as along the riparian forests of the Danube, before finally arriving in the busier area around Pyburg/Mauthausen at the end of our stage.

Description

We cover the first few kilometers of stage no. 3 of the Mostviertel Way of St. James from Wallsee-Sindelburg to Mauthausen along the idyllic Donau-Altarm-Weg. Right at the start of the trail, we pass a monument in honor of St. James, patron saint of hikers and pilgrims. The tranquillity along the Danube, the untouched nature and the beautiful view of Strengberg, which is still a short distance away, make this trail a truly special experience. At Rohrmühle, however, we leave the Altarmweg and continue "inland" on the Mostviertel circular hiking trail. We reach Kleinhaag, Limbach and finally Strengberg with the Johannes-Nepomuk Chapel, the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the historic post office building. We cross the village in a westerly direction and continue through a relatively sparsely populated area. For a while we walk along the floodplain of Grünau and reach Erla and the Benedictine collegiate church located here. The route continues downhill to the parish church of St. Pantaleon in the village of the same name and then through Marksee and Arthof across the Enns Canal to Pyburg. From Pyburg it is only a short distance to the town center of Mauthausen, which is located directly on the Danube. In Mauthausen itself, you can visit the parish church of St. Nicholas on a hill, which was dedicated to the patron saint of boatmen and carters due to its proximity to the Danube.
