From Aggsbach village through the Dunkelsteinerwald forest to Mautern

Extremely attractive "Danube cut-off" through the Dunkelsteinerwald, geologically a foothill of the Waldviertel.

Route information Route length : 21.0 km - Height differences : Schenkenbrunn, 525 m; Mautern, 201 m; - Surface : asphalted road - Characteristics : After the longer ascent to Maria Langegg, the route is winding with several shorter ascents and descents, beautiful panoramic sections and small villages. - Route : Aggsbach-Dorf, Gansbach / Maria Langegg junction (km 0.0) - past the Aggsbach Charterhouse junction (inn, km 1.0) - turn left (km 2.8) and ascend through woodland with two hairpin bends (km 4.0) - Approach to Maria Langegg pilgrimage church (km 5.8) - winding road with ascents and descents to Schenkenbrun (525 m, km 11.0) - continue to Oberbergern and Unterbergern (km 17.5) - descent to Mautern (km 21.0).

Interesting Facts

Maria Langegg: Around 1600, following the miraculous healing of his child, Matthäus Häring, the administrator for the Archbishop of Salzburg, donated a chapel and the miraculous image. Ever since the time of the great plague epidemics, the “Austrian Hill of Help and Healing” has been regarded as a religious center and a place of refuge for the sick and afflicted. For 330 years, the Servite Order cared for the pilgrims. Aggsbach Charterhouse: Founded in 1380, the monastery was dissolved by Emperor Joseph II in 1782 and converted into a castle. The Carthusian Museum chronicles the work of the Carthusians and traces the history of the monastery. Mautern Roman Museum: Located next to Austria’s best-preserved fort ruins in the castle’s Baroque granary. Among the most important exhibits are the love charm, the military diploma, a glazed figurine vase, and animal masks. The museum also features a Roman room with reconstructed wall paintings and a kitchen with tableware spanning five centuries. · Hours: July 3–October 31, 2020, Fri: 12:00 PM–4:00 PM, Sat–Sun: 10:00 AM–4:00 PM
