From the pilgrimage site of Maria Langegg, this DUR takes us along the Way of St. James to the ruins of Aggstein Castle. We hike downhill along the Eselsteig trail. At the first opportunity, we cross the road and continue towards Aggsbach village.
Sturdy hiking boots, rain protection, sufficient drinks and food as well as a Dunkelsteinerwald hiking map.
Our DUR starts at the monastery entrance in Maria Langegg. From here, we walk straight ahead, slightly downhill to the state road, which we cross and then immediately turn right. We follow the path and at the next junction turn right. After the barrier on the forest road, we go right slightly uphill and keep walking straight through the forest. At the next cross path, there is a final view of the Maria Langegg monastery before we dive back into the forest and follow the path to the castle ruins. Upon arrival at the castle ruins, the shop invites you for a short break, and for an admission fee, we can visit Aggstein Castle ruins. Afterwards, we follow the road downhill and soon turn right onto the Eselsteig, which leads us over forest paths to the access road to the ruins. We cross this, keep right immediately, and follow the hollow path parallel to the road. Later, we take the path to the left and walk downhill towards Aggsbach-Dorf. At the end of the path, we then turn left and walk along the state road to the elementary school. Here we keep right, walk past the hammer forge, and follow the path to the Charterhouse, where a visit to the newly created Carthusian garden and church is offered.
Parking is available in Maria Langegg and at the Aggsbach Charterhouse.
