Cycling tour Starting from Vienna
Charming Contrasts You’ll only get a good view of the Danube at the start of the eighth stage. After that, the trail winds through the wintry Danube Floodplains National Park, which is no less beautiful. The destination of this leg is Hainburg, Austria’s easternmost city. Located on the Slovakian border, the town offers many sights, such as the old castle complex and the modern Luther Church.

Vienna offered a wealth of sights. And you probably still have many memories running through your mind: for example, of Schönbrunn Palace and the Schönbrunn Zoo, of Vienna’s Old Town with St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg, the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum, the Imperial Treasury, the Spanish Riding School, the Museum of Art History, and the MuseumsQuartier; Belvedere Palace; the Prater with the Giant Ferris Wheel; Art Nouveau architecture; coffeehouses; and wine taverns.
But now, nature awaits you as far as the eye can see. Because even before you’ve truly left the city, you’ll already find yourself in the wintry Donau-Auen National Park, which stretches like a green ribbon between Vienna and Bratislava. It’s a habitat for over 800 species of higher plants, 30 species of mammals, 100 species of breeding birds, and around 60 species of fish.
Near Stopfenreuth, we recommend a detour—from the floodplain forest down to the Danube, where the “Au-Terrasse” viewing platform offers views of the river landscape (campground, natural swimming). From here, it’s not far to the Danube Bridge near Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, which takes you to the south bank and, shortly thereafter, to Hainburg.
Vienna - Schönau - Stopfenreuth - Hainburg
Route Description:
Right at the start of your tour, you’ll cross to the other side of the river and ride along the New Danube and the picturesque riverside promenade. A stop at one of Vienna’s cafés is highly recommended.
At the central fuel depot in the Lobau, turn left and ride along Lobgrundstraße, following a long, sweeping right-hand curve. Then continue straight ahead for a short distance—still on Lobgrundstraße—until you turn left at the second right-hand curve.
You’ll leave the nearby Danube bank and ride through the wintry Danube floodplains—one of the largest floodplain landscapes in Central Europe—until you see a bridge on your left, which you’ll cross. Shortly before Schönau, the route branches off toward the east. After about 26 kilometers, just past the sleepy little village of Stopfenreuth, you’ll reach the federal highway; follow it south and cross the river on the Hainburg Danube Bridge. You’ll leave the bridge on your right and continue along Hollitzer Allee toward Donaulände.
A short time later, you’ll arrive in Hainburg, which you can spot from a distance thanks to the two distinctive hills to the right and left of the town, and which lies at the Hainburg Gate. Hainburg is home to one of the oldest fortified castles in Europe, which is definitely worth a visit.
