Description
With a length of 1,650 meters, the Rohrendorfer Kellergasse - actually: Lindobelgasse - is considered the longest wine cellar lane in Austria. There are 72 press houses and cellar pipes here, most of which are still maintained and serviced today. The majority of them date from after 1848, but some cellars are known to have been excavated as early as the 14th and 15th centuries.
You can eat and drink well in six wine taverns. The "open cellar doors" are open from April to October. The traditional Rohrendorf cellar lane festival also takes place every two years: for three days, around 30 cellar owners invite visitors to taste their wines and enjoy culinary delicacies. Some of the wine press houses also present handicrafts from the region.
Rohrendorf biotope: vines and bee-eaters
In the hollow paths, you can discover the regional soil that has given centuries of viticulture its character: conglomerate (solidified prehistoric gravel) and loess (fine earth sediment). A regular feathered guest in Rohrendorf is the bee-eater - a colorful bird that likes to breed in the steep loess walls.
