Calvary Hill is located east of the Aggsbach Charterhouse on the steep slope of the Dunkelsteinerwald. The Way of the Cross begins right next to the charterhouse and leads up to Calvary Hill along a path that is steep in places, winding in switchbacks and featuring steps.
The historic complex is particularly noteworthy: The Way of the Cross consists of 14 Baroque niche chapels. Inside them are stone reliefs depicting the individual stations of Christ’s Passion. The complex culminates in a crucifixion scene featuring painted wooden figures. The entire complex is listed as a historic landmark.
The Connection to the Charterhouse
The Way of the Cross is closely linked to the Aggsbach Charterhouse. After the monastery was dissolved in 1782, the Carthusian church became a parish church. From the end of the charterhouse complex, the historic Way of the Cross leads up to Calvary. Between 1985 and 1996, the Way of the Cross up to Calvary was among the features restored.
Even today, a visit here can be beautifully combined with a loop trail: The Kalvarienbergweg begins at the Aggsbach-Dorf municipal office, passes by the Carthusian monastery, and leads up via the Way of the Cross. The loop is about 4.5 km long, has an elevation gain of approximately 141 meters, and takes about 1½ hours to complete.
