The Pritzenau near Rossatz is one of the most beautiful alluvial forest areas in the Wachau. Situated between the Danube and vineyards, it shows the original river landscape as it was typical in many places before regulation: wide meadows, old trees, quiet side arms and rich wildlife. The interplay of water and land creates a unique atmosphere that has its own charm at any time of year. Walks through the renaturalized floodplain areas along the old arms of the Danube reveal the full diversity of flora and fauna. Here, rare species of fish such as the nase, the streber and the famous Danube huchen have once again found a habitat and refuge.
The starting point is the parking lot at the Rossatz sports field, just a few steps away from the Danube cycle path. From here, the trail leads directly into the Pritzenau floodplain. Wide, flat paths invite you to take a relaxing walk - perfect for families or nature lovers. The diversity of the Wachau floodplain can be discovered between mighty oaks, ash trees and willows. With a bit of luck, you may encounter kingfishers, herons or beavers. The small wooden footbridge over an old arm of the Danube is particularly attractive - an ideal place to pause and observe.
On the way back, the landscape opens up and the path leads along the vineyards back to Rossatz. From here, there is a wonderful view of the Danube and Göttweig Abbey opposite.
The wine taverns in Rossatz and Rührsdorf, which serve regional specialties and Wachau wines, are recommended for a culinary finale.
