Description

A popular excursion destination is the 291-metre-high Schlossberg with the majestic Heimenburg castle ruins! A webcam offers a wonderful panoramic view of Hainburg, the Donau-Auen National Park and Bratislava. The castle complex consists of a castle gate, castle courtyard, St. Pancras Chapel, palace and residential tower.

The history of this fortress dates back to the middle of the 11th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1040 and construction began in 1050. Things became particularly romantic here in 1252: the legendary later "Bohemian King" Ottokar married the Babenberg princess Margarete in the castle chapel, the so-called Pankratius Chapel. The castle experienced its heyday under Duke Leopold VI, the "Glorious", whose wife Theodora resided in Hainburg.

However, fate was not always kind to the castle: it was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1529 and suffered further serious damage during the second Turkish siege in 1683.

After 1742, the once-proud castle fell into a state of noticeable disrepair.

Fortunately, the dedicated "Schlossberg Working Group" association has been working to preserve the historic walls since 1975. Today, the Schlossberg is not only a popular Excursion destinations, but also an impressive backdrop for events and concerts.
