Total closure on the Danube Cycle Path

In the course of the landslide in the area of the municipality of Aggsbach Dorf, the Danube Cycle Path on the southern bank of the Danube between Aggsbach Dorf and Aggstein is closed. A graphical overview shows possible Danube crossings. The overview map is available for download here.

Alternative ways to bypass the closure of the Danube cycle path:

  • Coming from Mautern: Change to the northern bank using the ferry in Arnsdorf to Spitz. Please note the seasonal operating hours! The ferry Weißenkirchen-St. Lorenz and the motor ferry Dürnstein-Rossatz are not in operation from November to March!
  • Coming from Melk: Cross the Danube at the Melk bridge to switch to the northern route from Emmersdorf to Krems.

Bus Connections in the Wachau

For the regional bus line 720 (Krems-Rossatz-Schönbühel-Melk) on the south bank, a special timetable applies (valid from 1.9.2024) due to the rockslide on the B33 near Aggsbach Dorf. The regional bus route 720 will be operated separately during this period. That means there is a bus coming from Krems or Melk that takes the detour in Mautern or Aggsbach-Dorf. A second bus leaves Krems at the same time and goes to all stops up to Aggstein.

Arriving by Car

Access by car to the businesses and municipalities on the southern bank is possible on the B33 from Melk up to Aggsbach Dorf, and from Mautern up to Aggstein. However, there is good signage for the local detour via Maria Langegg, ensuring that the entire region, all tourism businesses, and locations on the southern bank are easily accessible.

What happened...

On June the 3rd, 2024, a rockslide occurred on the right bank of the Danube north of Aggsbach-Dorf, completely burying the B 33 Aggsteiner Straße and partially covering the Danube bike path on the right side of the river. Initial geological assessments were carried out by the State Geological Service and external geologists during the immediate safety measures. During the site surveys, not only the immediate collapse area but also the adjacent areas to the north and south were subjected to a preliminary geological assessment. Based on the current geological evaluation, no all-clear can be given yet. The fallen rock mass remaining on the slope is extremely unstable and at risk of collapsing. Before work can begin to clear the fallen rock mass along the road, the remaining blocks on the slope must be completely removed to ensure safe working conditions. Safe work is only possible from top to bottom. Therefore, it must be thoroughly checked whether the remaining rock area above and the adjacent areas have sufficient stability.

The right bank of the Danube between Melk and Göttweig is full of insider tips for wine lovers, those interested in culture and those who enjoy exercise.

The communities of Schönbühel-Aggsbach, Rossatz-Arnsdorf, Bergern im Dunkelsteinerwald, Mautern and Furt near Göttweig are located on the southern bank of the Wachau, which is quieter for tourists. A variety of cultural, culinary and sporting delights await guests here - always including the wonderful view of the famous sights of the Wachau's north bank.

Welcome to the businesses on the south bank!
