Traismauer parish church
The baroque parish church in Traismauer has a long history. At the beginning of the 9th century, Traismauer was a main town in the eastern county of Charlemagne. In 833, Prince Privina, who had fled from Moravia, was baptized in what was then St. Martin's Church in Traismauer. This historic event is commemorated today by the "Pribina Fountain" in front of the parish church, which was erected in 1999.
After the first wooden church building burnt down, a new parish church in the late Romanesque style was built on the remains around 1293. The original St. Martin's Church was rebuilt several times, most recently in the Baroque style. After a legal dispute lasting many years between Traismauer, which was given to the Archbishopric of Salzburg, and the Augustinian canon monastery of St. Georgen at the mouth of the Traisen in the 12th/13th century, Salzburg renounced the patronage of St. Martin and chose St. Rupert from Salzburg as the titular saint of the church.
The excavations under the Traismauer parish church have proved to be a treasure trove for archaeologists. The church was renovated in 1975 and the walls and screed floors uncovered in the nave provided a deep insight into the history of the parish church and the village of Traismauer. The oldest remains are those of the Roman military camp Augustianus from the 1st century AD in ancient Tragisamus. Originally, the command post of the camp was located here.
The grave of a 30-year-old man was also uncovered in the so-called lower church. This is the grave of the border count Cadaloc - a relative of Charlemagne's wife - who was killed by an arrowhead near Güns in the year 802 during the defense against the Avars from the east. The 6x6 meter burial chamber, the preserved teeth and the gold and silver threads in the clothing indicate that he was a high-ranking figure among the Carolingians.
