The market town of Maria Taferl in the district of Melk is considered Lower Austria's most important and Austria's second largest place of pilgrimage. The idyllic village is located in the Nibelungengau region at a climatically favorable altitude high above the Danube valley. The historical sights as well as the wooded hiking routes promise the most beautiful short breaks and excursions - away from the noise and traffic.
Maria Taferl Basilica: picturesque Marian shrine
The Maria Taferl pilgrimage basilica , beautifully situated on a hill above the Danube, offers magnificent views over the Danube valley and the hilly landscape of the Mostviertel region. The pilgrimage church was built over a period of five decades from 1660. Today's basilica minor was built around a wayside shrine to the Virgin Mary - which also explains the origin of the town's name. Legends tell of miraculous healings before construction began, which are said to have taken place around the middle of the 17th century.
Maria Taferl: hiking trails for the whole family
Numerous favorite hiking trails lead through Maria Taferl, offering beautiful views of the basilica and the mighty Danube. An easy route - which is also suitable for families with children - is the village circuit: it promises forest, asphalt and good views. The Marbach-Maria Taferl stage of the Nibelungengau long-distance hiking trail is more challenging.
