The start of the pilgrimage route is marked by a large scallop shell and the pilgrimage church “Maria am Birnbaum.” The church has been a Marian place of grace since 1737 and was consecrated to Saint James. From here, the route continues towards Hainburg to the Donau-Auen National Park. You walk along the main road to the edge of the town, where there is a small resting place. To the right, you continue on a side road to the Treppelweg next to the Danube. On the way to Hainburg, you pass the Röthelstein ruin. The ruin sits on a 30-meter-high rock promontory on the Danube, opposite the Devin burg ruins in Slovakia. Further along the Danube, Hainburg on the Danube offers a special medieval experience with one of the oldest and best-preserved town fortifications in Europe. The town presents itself with its narrow alleys and historic buildings as a picturesque gateway to the past. Over the Blutstiege steps you reach the Danube and pass directly by the ship pier heading towards Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.
From the Hainburg ship pier, a shady and paved path leads to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. You now follow the road until you reach a fork. Here there are two route options. Another option is to go left at the fork, up the hill to the Marian church, which is usually closed and only viewable from the outside. The second option is to go right at the fork towards Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. At the roundabout, you go left and can already see the Carnuntinum museum. The over 100-year-old museum is the treasure house of the Roman city of Carnuntum. After the spa center, there is a bus stop where you go right along the stream beforehand. At the end of the short path, turn right past the Elisabeth chapel. Now follow the signs towards Petronell-Carnuntum and then continue on the field paths towards Petronell-Carnuntum at the town's edge. Arriving in Petronell-Carnuntum, follow the signs to the right at the housing estate to the main road. Straight ahead leads directly to the Roman city of Carnuntum, where a Roman city quarter has been uniquely reconstructed on its original site worldwide. At the Roman city of Carnuntum, cross the street and the large parking lot towards the Heidentor. Pass by the region's landmark and also the symbol of the Carnuntum Pilgrimage Route, the Heidentor. Now continue to follow the waymarks of the pilgrimage route to Wildungsmauer. Having arrived in Wildungsmauer, you can visit the Romanesque church from the 16th century or follow the sign left to Buschenschank Jahner towards Regelsbrunn. In Regelsbrunn, pass by the Jakob church and follow the fork slightly right towards Haslau. At the small chapel, turn left towards Maria Ellend. Arriving in Maria Ellend, you can not only visit the pilgrimage church “Our Lady of the Rosary” but also the famous Lourdes grotto.
At Maria Ellend, pass the church and continue along the road. After about 200 meters, a sign points slightly right to Fischamend. After a while, you reach the Donau-Auen, a particularly beautiful section of the Carnuntum Pilgrimage Route, where you continue straight ahead. Passing under the highway bridge and by a large pumping station, you soon reach the church in Fischamend. Follow the signs to the left and you will see the church. If you want, you can explore the town hall more closely. Passing the church, continue through the settlement back towards the Danube. There, walk along the Treppelweg to Mannswörth. In Mannswörth, you have the option to immediately follow the Vienna Pilgrimage Route to the left or go straight ahead and visit the beautiful Jakob church in Schwechat.
