  • Fortified church Scharndorf

The church is located directly in the center of the Lower Austrian municipality of Scharndorf. The building was erected, probably uniformly, during the Gothic period at the beginning of the 14th century. Sources refer to the year 1083 as the first documented mention.

The most striking feature of the Scharndorf fortified church is undoubtedly its crenellated Gothic west tower, which is adjoined by the nave. The tower is surrounded by numerous postholes and features, among other things, a stone coat of arms plaque. It was built in beautifully layered quarry stone masonry with local stone. It has chamfered semi-circular windows on three sides and a crenellated crown at the transition to the octagon. The tower of the church has a conical spire.

The Gothic nave is adjoined by the Baroque choir with a 5/8 end, which houses the high altar from the 18th century. The nave was given a flat ceiling in 1931.
