Hiking tour Starting from
Aggsbach-Markt, whose municipality also includes Willendorf with the famous "Venus of Willendorf" (from the Palaeolithic Age, Museum Venusium), indicates that we are in one of the oldest settlement sites in Austria. At the market square, we are greeted by a fish statue, which points to the importance of fishing. Our walk of approx. 4.5 km leads along the Endlingbach stream, the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a magnificent, late Romanesque pillar basilica from the 13th century, through the village with some old villas and pretty new houses to the hill of Bireben. This is where our circular route crosses the World Heritage Trail. There we follow a wonderful, natural forest path that leads through a mixed hornbeam and oak forest. The views of the Danube, Aggsbach-Markt and the legendary Aggstein ruins on the opposite right bank of the Danube are always surprising. In the forest, we enjoy the many liverworts that form real nests and other spring flowers in spring. We return to the market square via the eastern end of the village, where we can round off our hike with a visit to a wine tavern. The hiking trail (no. 19) is uniformly and consistently signposted with yellow signs.
